5-Cards: Game Rules
Objective
The goal of 5-Cards is simple: have the best five-card hand at the end of the game. If you do, shout “I win!” or something similar to claim your victory. It’s all about using your cards wisely and reading the other players to block their chances of winning.
Setup
- Players: 2 to 6
- Deck: Standard 52-card deck (no Jokers)
- The dealer shuffles and deals five cards to each player face down.
- The remaining cards are placed face down in a draw pile. The top card is flipped over and placed beside the draw pile to start the discard pile.
How to Play
Starting the Game
Players take turns, starting with the player to the dealer’s left. On your turn, you have three choices:
- Pick up the top card from the discard pile.
- Draw a card from the draw pile.
- Discard one card from your hand face up onto the discard pile.
Building Your Hand
After each turn, you will hold five cards. The goal is to use strategy to build the strongest possible hand from the five cards you are dealt.
Ending the Game
When you have a winning hand, declare “I win!” and show your cards. Only one player can win each round, so make sure you claim your victory as soon as possible.
Winning Hand Rankings (Highest to Lowest)
- Royal Flush: A, K, Q, J, 10 (same suit)
- Straight Flush: Five consecutive cards of the same suit
- Four of a Kind: Four cards of the same rank
- Full House: Three of a kind + a pair
- Flush: Five cards of the same suit
- Straight: Five consecutive cards, not necessarily in the same suit
- Two Pair: Two cards of one rank and two cards of another rank
Tips for Beginners
- Pay attention to the discard pile. The card that’s discarded can be useful for completing your hand.
- Keep an eye on your opponents and try to block their chances of getting a winning hand.
- If you get a pair in your hand, it’s often worth holding onto it—pairs are the foundation of strong hands!
- Don’t forget to observe your opponents for clues—body language often reveals whether they’re bluffing or ready to win!
